February 26th, 2010 — Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, North Thailand, Travel Warning
It really makes me sad that every year report the same travel warning for what was such a lovely city in the North. When you had enough of Bangkok traffic jams and polluted streets you could go up and fill your lungs for a week with fresh mountain air in Chiang Mai.
It makes me equally sad to see that the Thai governments solution to the problem is to give out facemask then address the real problem, burning forest and rice fields.
The Thai government promises every year to take hard measures to stop this old and bad practice to burn old rice fields but still every year it happens.
Tourists in Bangkok do not suffer so much from it but if you take the bus to Pattaya you can sometimes not see the road because off all the fields on fire on the side of the road.
The healthy limit in Chiang Mai is already pass long time ago and I strongly urge you not to go Chiang Mai for a while at least until they stop burning the fields.’
With all the unrest going on in Bangkok and the smog on the North i guess heading south is the best solution but off course it is very very hot this time of year.

The Thai government is trying to make sure the same deadly bush fire that still going on in Australia will not happen in Thailand as well.
Even if the government has gone out with a big fire warning there is still people that every day burning the rice fields and the garbage outside. Some even set forest on fire to try to clear more land for crops. The police seldom do anything about it and that is also a big part of the problem.
Thailand is on the high risk since we have so dry weather from November until April and last year it was a big fire in North Thailand but few people died.
If you see a bush fire please notify the police or fire department in your area.

The Thai government is trying to control the easy price hick some hotels and other companies do for tourists and Thais. Some tourists said they been charged 80 THB for a rice and curry.
Flowers will off course fetch a higher price then normal but in Chiang Mai the Thai florist have created a monopoly according to a famous online Thai Florist.

Found this add on a forum and would like to help him out since it is such a nice offer. If you want to get away from it all this free house is a prefect getaway for a year.
Studio house, with a small full kitchen and a full bath, next to a pond that has been stocked with fish. The house is fully furnished, with a king sized teak bed with a mattress pad, fitted sheets and pillows. There is a teak table with four chairs and the kitchen has a full set of utinsiles. A 29 inch television can be provided for a deposit. There are four fishing poles and fishing equipment. There are also two concrete patio tables. The house is near Saraphi near Chiang Mai. The rent is free, under the following provisions. I would require a year’s lease. The person staying at the house would be considered a “caretaker.” They would be responsible for watering the 90 coconut trees, fifty teak trees (as needed) and the various other trees (banana, mango and papaya).
There is no internet but you can order a IPSTAR it also snow sometimes here. Tenants would be required to stay on property every night, with very few exceptions. If interested, email me at; d_decoursey[at]msn.com.
