The nationwide Loi Krathong Festival holds its focal celebration at its birthplace, the ancient city of Sukothai. The festival's highlight is the launching of candlelit krathongs, rafts made of banana leaves or bread, onto Sukothai Historical Park's pond at night.

Traditionally, wishes are made to the illuminated krathong and should the candle stay alight, the wish would be granted. Adding to the celebrations amidst the crumbling ruins are traditional dances, food stalls and a fireworks display.

Major Loi Krathong celebrations are also seen in Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
