Over the years, there have been many cases worse than this, some are probably very guilty to the crimes they committed, and some are just in the wrong place at the wrong time. One thing is very clear and that is that some officers from the Thai police are involved in these can of shakedowns to get money from tourists. Thailand never has been and probably never will be a safe haven for drugs.
The following story is just a warning example on what might happen if you just take a joint let someone smoke in your room.
Sweden man Patrik Löfgren 25 years of age arrested in on off those silly mock up arrests again.
Sure I do not believe he is all that innocent and I am sure he smoked marijuana before in his life but putting him in prison and asking for a 45 000 THB bail is just silly.
The Thai police are always trying to find ways to get extra money. Last weekend down in Pattaya and 12.00 I had two guys asking me in the middle of the street to buy some weed. If I had bought from them the Thai Police would arrested me soon afterwards.
Any Thai person committing the same crime would not even see the cells he would be let off with a much small bail and maybe even a bribe for 2000 THB.
One person I know was arrested with about 100 grams of marijuana on the bus from Samet Island he was Thai and he paid 5000 THB in the pocket to the police.
To put in Thai prison in a set up by some Thai girl is just silly. From what Patrick told the Swedish Aftonbladet.se he was not even holding the one cigarette and there were many people in the room. Where is the evidence? Why are the other people smoking not arrested as well?
Just one word of advice to Patrik and all others trying to leave the country before trial you do not go from the airport in Bangkok you go down to Phuket or something with bus and take a boat or something to Malaysia or Singapore.
Here is the end of this sad story
Tourists get 2 month in jail for a 700 THB crime Thai justice is served and the police is paid
A few months ago, we wrote about Swedish that smoked something he should not have done. Well he finally got his punishment, it was 700 THB, and he cannot come back for 2 year.
After almost two month in Thai jail with 46 other people in the cell the only punishment he got was 700 THB in fine. You must sometimes ask the Thai justice system if that is fair when Thai people shoot and kill people and get out on bail the next day.
The bail or denial of bail should be in proportion for the crime and one smoke does not give almost two month in hell before a trial that gives a 700 THB fine.
The only reason to keep a foreigner in a prison this long time is to press him and relatives for money. If you example is caught in the UK or Sweden with a single weed joint they simple fine you and kick you out the same day.
When the Swede finally wanted to leave prison the police refuse to let him go because they wanted more money even the trial was finished.
As I always say in these cases, do not get involved with the police in Thailand just pay your way out before you come to the police station. It is better to pay 1 police on the spot then 20 in the station.
If you get bail and you know you are, going to convicted get the hell out from Thailand there is always other places to go.
