The National Buddhism Office is set to nominate Somdet Phra Maharajamangkhalajahn as the next Supreme Patriarch of Thailand.

The office said the 1962 Sangha Act stipulates that the most senior Somdet is to serve as the next Supreme Patriarch, once the position becomes vacant.

Phra Maharajamangkhalajahn is the abbot of Wat Paknam Phasicharoen and has been serving as acting Supreme Patriarch since the late Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara fell ill in 2002.

The nomination will be considered by the Sangha Supreme Council of Thailand. The appointment will become official once it is endorsed by His Majesty the King
