The director of Chiang Mai International Airport has voiced concerns over possible accidents that may happen during Yi Peng Lantern Festival, a northern tradition equivalent to Loy Krathong. The director proposed that authorities be informed in advance of any lantern floating activity taking place in the areas close to the airport in order for them to arrange for suitable air traffic control. Lantern floating is widely popular among locals and tourists alike. However, safety measures must be taken into account to prevent accidents from happening in the area. One of the ways is to use lanterns made of colorful materials that are clearly visible in the sky, with fuel that lasts no longer than 8 minutes. The lanterns should also be released after safety reason.
