Security in the restive south has been beefed up for possible attacks on the ninth anniversary of Takbai incident.

Lt. Gen. Sakon Cheuntrakul, commander of Army Region Four has called for a meeting with all security-related units in Yala to brace for violence due to the Takbai anniversary. Intelligence reports suggest militants are planning activities to mark the ninth anniversary of the incident, he said.

Seventy eight people died at the hands of security forces after demonstrating outside a police station in Takbai District nine years ago.

Yala's business areas have been severely hit by planted bombs in recent years. Authorities have been constantly on their toes checking out cars and motorcycles coming into the area.
