Thai Prime Minister and her Lao counterpart have joined in a religious ceremony to mark the end of Buddhist Lent on Saturday.

Yingluck Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand and Tongsing Tammawong, Prime Minister of Lao PDR together joined in the ceremony offering alms to 3099 monks on the bank of the Mekhong river in the northeastern province of Nong Khai.

This is the first time that the two country leaders have joined this kind of religious ceremony together. The event was aimed at promoting the relationship and understanding between the two neighboring countries.

Thousands of Thais and Laotians also participated in the ceremony that was held at a temple in the province.

During the ceremony, PM Yingluck offered her condolences to PM Tongsing on Lao's worst plane crash that killed 49 passengers and crews on board three days ago, while PM Tongsing thanked Thailand for sending in teams to help searching for the plane and bodies of those victims.
