Yesterday, four men detained for a range of minor offences died when a police station in Nonthaburi went up in flames and a guard fled with them still locked up.

It is believed that an electrical short circuit caused the fire. At around 4am, the fire spread quickly after files in a storeroom caught alight. The four detainees, on the first floor, are thought to have died from smoke inhalation.

The station gave each family Bt50,000 as initial compensation.
