The Ministry of Education has ordered all schools in Bangkok to defer the opening date of new semester from 17 May to 24 May 2010 instead, for safety of all students.

According to Education Minister Chinnaworn Boonyakiat, his ministry has already made an announcement for the postponement of opening date of all schools located in the capital city because the government is concerned over the safety of students amid the current unrest situation.

The operation of security forces would be more difficult if the schools remain opened, Mr Chinnaworn said.

Regarding schools in other provinces where the emergency decree is invoked, the minister said executives of those schools are permitted to make their own decision on appropriate opening dates.

Mr Chinnaworn noted that his ministry would coordinate with schools affected by the political turmoil, to provide make-up classes for their students due to the delayed opening of the new semester.
