Free Digital TV to Thai People

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) is planning a financial assistance program to help millions of households switch from analog TV to digital TV, at the cheapest-possible cost.

NBTC Deputy Chairman, Col. Nathi Sukonrat, said that the NBTC subcommittee on digital TV transformation has agreed to support Thai viewers’ changing from analog to digital TV and to give them financial assistance for the purchase of digital TV equipment. The assistance has been proposed in the form of coupons.

According to data obtained by NBTC, there are around 22 million households throughout the country eligible for the assistance.

Col. Nathi stated that the source of money for the coupon project will be allocated from the starting bid prices, collected from participating digital TV bidders.

He added that the subcommittee’s decision was not final as the proposal needs an approval from the NBTC board, expected on January 14.

Col. Nathi said that the NBTC is also to determine the real value of frequency to be used for the calculation of the initial price in the digital TV auction bidding. The commission expects the value estimate to be finished by March.
