The Ministry of Transport has officially begun operating the newest bus route between Chiang Mai province and Luang Prabang, which is the 8th route linking Thailand and Laos.

Deputy Permanent Secretary for Transport Silapachai Jarukasemrattana has presided over the opening ceremony for the 8th bus route between Thailand and the Lao People's Democratic Republic at the Chiang Mai Arcade Bus Terminal. The route is operated with a second-class bus, which departs once a day from Chiang Mai province and makes a stop in Chiang Rai before crossing the border to Louang Namtha, Oudomxay and Luang Prabang provinces of Laos. The ride takes about 18 hours, and the fare is initially set at 1,200 baht.

After the construction of the 4th Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge over the Mekong River is completed in 2013, the bus will be upgraded to first-class with the fare increased to 1,500 baht.

This new route is a result of the cooperation between the Department of Land Transport of Thailand and the Department Public Works and Transport of Laos. It is expected to help promote tourism, economy, and investment between the two countries.

It is estimated that a large number of travelers will come to use the new route. However, all passengers are required to present their passports when passing through the Thai-Lao border.
