Thai Airways President Piyasvasti Amranand has announced a plan to establish a low cost airline, a sister brand to the Thai Airways, under the business expansion plan.

The sister airline, which has been named Thai Wings, will come under the management of Thai Airways. However, it will use the same logo but at smaller size and fly shorter distances such as those in Thailand and surrounding countries.

According to Mr. Piyasvasti, Thai Airway is not required to get a permit from the Ministry of Transport to launch its low cost airline as it is considered a branch of Thai Airway’s service the same way Thai Cargo is operated.

The low cost airline will begin its service around May or June next year with its fleet of 11 planes. Permanent Secretary for Transport Suphot Saplom said his Ministry did not object the business plan for Thai Airways as long as business requirements were met. He added that he was not clear on how the low cost airline would be established as no details had been given so far. There was only a business plan.
