Upon his return from the World Congress on High Train meeting, held in Peking, China, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said the Thai government hoped to complete the Thai section of the Asian railway in four years.

According to Mr Suthep, who went to China last week to take part in the meeting relative to the details of Thailandís first high-speed train project, he had discussed with the Chinese rail authority on the linking of the routes from Bangkok to Malaysia in the south and to Loa in the northeast. The two countries agreed that construction should be completed in no more than four years if it began in December next year.

However, China urged the Thai cabinet to quickly approve the details of the project so that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) could be signed in March or April next year, enabling the construction to begin before the end of 2011.
