Director-General of the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department (DNP) Manopat Huamuangkaew said that a fact-finding committee is set up to investigate the recent deaths of elephants in the Kaeng Krachan national park and will conclude its probe in 30 days.

The DNP chief told the press that the panel is exploring two motives for the killing which include local farmers slaying the elephants for encroaching on their plantations and businessmen paying poachers to kill elephants for their tusks.

Following reports that the national park officials play a role in poaching the elephants, the DNP has launched an investigation into the suspected involvement of Kaeng Krachan national park chief Chaiwat Limlikitaksorn and his assistants in the wildlife crimes.

Mr Manopat added that the agency is considering plans to create an elephant corridor between mountains covering a distance of up to 1 kilometer in order to allow elephants to search for food without encroaching on agricultural land. -News from NNT [GOOGLE MAP]PHETCHABURI, Thailand[/GOOGLE MAP]
