Transport Minister Sopon Zarum stands firm against Thai Airways’ recent decision on joining Tiger Air of Singapore to launch a new low-cost airline “Thai Tiger Air” despite the prime minister’s and the finance minister’s green light.

Transport Minister Sopon Zarum stated that he would accompany Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij to visit Thai Airways (THAI) Board on 2 September to brief the policies and discuss about their latest joint venture project. He said he still doubted THAI’s decision to establish “Thai Tiger Air”, while the capital raise project for the local low-cost airline “NokAir” responsible by the national flag carrier was still underway.

Mr Sopon added that the ministry had tasked its legal team to investigate whether such agreement which had been made between the two airlines was practicable or not, giving the emphasis on the aspect of aviation rights granting to foreign operators.

Despite speculation that the PM and Finance Minister join the policy briefing visit to protect Mr Piyasawat Amranan, president of Thai Airways, The Ministry of Transport is still insisting its stance against the Thai Tiger Air joint venture, said Mr Sopon.
