At least 8 telecommunication service companies have already bought the 3G license tenders from the National Telecommunication Commission (NTC) in order to participate in the bidding to operate the third-generation mobile-phone technology.

Dr. Natee Sukonrat, a commissioner of the NTC, revealed that the 8 companies to take part in the 3G license auction include DTAC, I-Mobile, Jasmine International, AIS, True Corporation and its subsidiaries.

The NTC will accept the license tenders from interested bidders on 30 August and will process them during 1-15 September. The actual auction will take place from 20-28 September.

Dr Natee said if the bidding goes as planned and the winners turn out to be the old 2G network operators, he expected the 3G to be fully in service by the end of this year. However, the service could be delayed by another 3-4 years if the bidding could not get off the ground in September.
