The Department of Traffic and Transportation has revealed that it is launching a new smartphone application which provides real-time traffic updates, in collaboration with the Intelligent Traffic Information Center (iTIC).

The department’s deputy director Nikom Porntharakcharoen said the new application, expected to be launched by the end of August, aims to relay traffic images captured by the capital’s 150 CCTVs installed on major streets to Bangkok commuters.

The images from CCTVs had previously been used in conjunction with the Intelligent Traffic Signs and with the department’s website.

Mr Nikom said with the launch of the new app, members of the public can easily access accurate and up-to-date traffic updates without browsing through websites.

The free app is expected to initially feature real-time still images of traffic reports which are updated on a minute-by-minute basis. The department is also planning to incorporate live motion feeds into the app in the near future.
